HDR (High Dynamic Range Photography) is going to have a place in our workflow for some time to come. HDR is actually a simple concept, but somewhat tricky (until now) to implement for digital images. HDR is a number of images, taken at different exposures that when combined in software, contain an entire dynamic range of the scene, elements from the extreme shadows to the extreme highlights, and everything in between.
Written by: Kevin L.
There are plenty of abandoned structures in my city, Detroit. In some areas, building and home vacancies amount in the 60% range, obviously the highest in the U.S., and one of the worse off cities when it comes to blight in the western world. The decay has been happening for years now. Starting in the 1960's, the area has been decaying exponentially as southeast Michigan has become more and more segregated (the Detroit area is the most segregated metro area in the country), corrupt Mayoral, City Council and school board administrations robbing and preying on their constituents, and of course as the domestic auto industry decline to brink of death. The result is an almost post-apocalyptic area that is difficult to describe, but easier to explain with the aid of photography. You have to see whats happened to this once vibrant area to believe it.
Written by: Kevin L.
ere, we have a good example of why photographers, that's us, need to be prepared at all times. Capturing the unexpected should be part of the repertoire. Here's my example. Yesterday afternoon, while writing updates for our Top 100, a deer happend to visit my backyard. Quick to grab one of my cameras, in this case, my Nikon D80 had my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR attached.
Written by: Kevin L.
There is another filter that you can add to your personal arsenal of simple tools to do the same thing, create abstract studies. The Liquify tool has been in the Photoshop family for years. Its a fun filter, you can really mess with someones portrait and get a lot of laughs. I usually don't use the filter for that though, what I like to do, is mess with images to see what kind of alternate art I can come up with.

Using the image that I created with the Motion Blur tool, I'm going to take it a step further using the Liquify filter.
Written by: Kevin L.
