Fall Color Photography

Autumn. A favorite time of year for many nature photographers. For those lucky enough to live in areas where you have 4 seasons, right now, early October is a special time. In the northern latitudes, colors are at peak or just past. In many areas, fall color is just starting to appear, and that means its time for nature photographers to get out their digital cameras, tripods and a circular polarizer and get out and photograph fall color.

Photographing Rare Clouds

ong time nut for photographing storms and clouds here. I do admit it. Been working on my "Sky" portfolio for years. On the night of June 23, 2010 we had some powerful storms roll through Michigan. Passing through early evening, we were presented with an extremely rare occurence of what is a newly designated cloud type; Undulus Asperatus clouds. I've only seen them just a few times in the past 20 years, but last night was the first opportunity for me to capture the images of these rare clouds. Turbulent motions between differing air masses create undulating clouds Meteorologists have proposed that these clouds be designated as the first new cloud type to be named in over 50 years: Undulus Asperatus.

Photography Above the Clouds

Millions of flights a year. Billions of fliers. Out of that many that travel the friendly skies, how many do you see taking photos through the window? If you haven't tried it, you might be pleasantly surprised at the results. If you're patient, lucky with light and sitting in a window seat away from the wing, there is nothing stopping you from passing the time working on your "sky" photography.

Color As An Element of Photographic Composition

As in our eBook Improve Your Photography, one of the 50 techniques talks about using color as and element of composition. This article just serves as a reminder that as a photographer, you can also think of yourself of a modern artist. Use digital images to create prints of just color. I learned this early on from my older sister who is an artist. Our home growing up was filled with her abstract paintings of color, no subject, just color. Large 4 foot by 4 foot canvases of color themes were hung on our walls, and I've had the bug ever since.

Taking Photographs With A Theme In Mind
