Photographing The Total Lunar Eclipse December 20th and 21st 2010

A lunar (scientific term for the Moon) eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the shadow of earth, thus blocking light from our sun. Instead of turning the moon dark, it actually turns the \moon into a beautiful shade of red, the color of the earth’s shadow. The earth's shadow casts a red glow due to its atmosphere. Our atmosphere redirects light, through its dusty layer of air to the shades of red seen during the “umbra” of the eclipse, the time when the light of the sun is totally blocked by the earth.

Fall Color Photography

Autumn. A favorite time of year for many nature photographers. For those lucky enough to live in areas where you have 4 seasons, right now, early October is a special time. In the northern latitudes, colors are at peak or just past. In many areas, fall color is just starting to appear, and that means its time for nature photographers to get out their digital cameras, tripods and a circular polarizer and get out and photograph fall color.

Recent Photography Trend #2: Point And Shoot Size DSLRs

Panasonic, Olympus, Sony have all claimed stakes in this new class of camera. Olympus and Panasonic always known for excellent point n' shoots adopted the new Micro Four Thirds standard and have come out with some great offerings. Sony has entered the fray with their Nex-3 and Nex-5 offerings, based on a standard APS-C size sensor, the same that we see in our Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic and Pentax DSLRs. Think about this for a moment. You're in the market (like I am) for a prime, fixed focal length wide angle lens for your landscapes. You're kit lens or everyday zoom just isn't cutting it for quality, so you're in the market for some pro quality wide angle glass. For the same price as that prime, why not add a second DSLR with a fixed wide angle prime, pro quality for the same price? You get a second body for nothing! Hence, my personal interest in this new class of camera.

Recent Photography Trend #6: The Super Zoom

A trend that has been growing in recent years is the use of the all-in-one zoom lens. My students often use them and the rate is increasing I am discovering, and I'm seeing unexpected EXCELLENT results from them in their use of all-in-one zoom lenses. That doesn't say that super zooms don't have their tradeoffs, they do.

In the past few years all of our major DSLR manufacturers have solidified their product lines with full frame (35mm equivalent) digital SLRs. With that advent in mind, many a pro and enthusiast have declared film "dead". Its taken over 10 years for us to get to this point where the technology was affortable and possible, and now in the digital world we have the potential quality in a digital SLR that rivals that of medium format photographer, really!

The Humid Photographic Fog Effect

It wasn't on purpose. Out a few mornings ago, the light was just right. I wanted to add some images to my extensive "Amy's Garden" portfolio, the portfolio I've been building for years of Amy's garden. Flowers, plants, wildlife. The garden Amy has dedicated herself to cultivating for 13 years. I've been photographing it for 5 years now with plans on publishing a book of her nature efforts. The sun had risen just an hour before, I had the indirect light, and I grabbed my Nikon DSLR with Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Zoom Lens (click here for the Canon version of the lens) attached

4 New Nikon Lenses Announced For 2010

Nikon has announced 4 new lenses targeted at its full frame DSLR users, with a new prime mixed in. Trying to serve the needs of its full frame D700, D3X users, Nikon is quickly filling voids for enthusiasts and pro's that want the convenience of the zoom ranges available to the popular APS-C sensor crowd. Announced are the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR, AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED V, AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4 G ED VR and the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G ED.
