Photographer Spotlight – Leonard Nimoy

digital photography dailyLive Long and Prosper As A Photographer, Film Director Actor, Poet, Singer and Songwriter: Leonard Nimoy at 80

Being a lifelong photographer while at the same time being a lifelong photographer gives me a 40 year perspective of others careers to follow. The first to come to mind is Ansel Adams primarily because I met him and was a fan of his work from such a young age. At that same time I was also a Trekkie. Still am. Best of both worlds? For years I’ve been a fan of Leonard Nimoy not only as one of my favorite actors (Trekkie here), but additionally from one of his other multiple art forms he is so passionate about and engaged in, photography.

Recent Photography Trend #7: Digital Infrared

digital infraredConvert That Old Digital Camera to Infrared

Back in the film days, or BF (before digital cameras) a small breed of photographers would load up their 35mm cameras with infrared film (in the dark I may add!), attach special filters in front of their lenses, and pursue a true art of infrared black and white photography. It was difficult to work with at best. The photographer would have to store the film in cold temperatures, and never knew what type of results they would get from the film, you see, we didn’t have immediate feedback like we do know with LCD’s on our cameras.

The Humid Photographic Fog Effect

Letting Nature Add Special Effects To Your Images

It wasn’t on purpose. Out a few mornings ago, the light was just right. I wanted to add some images to my extensive “Amy’s Garden” portfolio, the portfolio I’ve been building for years of Amy’s garden. Flowers, plants, wildlife. The garden Amy has dedicated herself to cultivating for 13 years. I’ve been photographing it for 5 years now with plans on publishing a book of her nature efforts. The sun had risen just an hour before, I had the indirect light, and I grabbed my Nikon DSLR with Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Zoom Lens (click here for the Canon version of the lens) attached.  To my surprise, the protective UV filter on my lens had fogged up immediately, the humidity that morning was in the mid-90’s!

Spring Flower Photography

Spring Flower PhotographySome Tips, Some Lenses

In my part of the country, spring usually comes late April. This year it sprung early, At this time in the year, and its only for about a week, the tree’s begin to bud, grass begins to grow again and turn green, and the marigolds begin to flower. For the nature photographer, it’s time to get back to work!

The tree’s at this time of year begin to bud, and within a week, boom! They’re full of leaves. If you can catch the tree’s as they are blooming, you can get some very interesting images. The emergence of spring also means color for many photographers. The greys, blacks and whites are gone from winter, and the great outdoors starts to look good again. Bring out your macro lenses, it’s time to start shooting!

Blur as an Element of Composition

A blurred image taken with a Nikon 7900 Digital CameraA large part of my personal portfolio, the use of blur in my personal photographic work is ever expanding. I’m not condoning sloppy technique that result in a soft image, I’m talking about introducing blur into certain images in order to elicit a desired effect; an abstract study of color and blur. I’ve been working on a portfolio of such images for about 5 years now (hmm, another book idea!).

Remembering Robert Mapplethorpe – Master of Photography

The Photography of Robert MapplethorpePhotographer Spotlight

We cover photographers from all walks of life on Digital Photography Daily for an important reason. Viewing the work of the masters of the art of photography is how photographers learn and validate their own personal work. Viewing the works of the masters such as Pete Turner, Ansel Adams, Michael Kenna and William Neill should be a regular task for the beginning, enthusiast or professional photographer. In the least, viewing the work of other photographers should provide inspiration. Paying honor to who I consider one of the most important photographers of the 20th century, Robert Mapplethorpe, is my contribution to your sources of inspiration.
